After much deliberation, and after consultation with other parishes, we have decided to introduce the singing of the Mass parts (i.e. Gloria, responsorial psalm, Gospel acclamation, the “Holy, Holy, Holy,” memorial acclamation, Great Amen) at Sunday Masses beginning this weekend. Congregational hymns will not be sung.
Given the shorter duration of these sung parts of the Mass as compared to hymn singing, as well as the fact that all worshipers wear masks, this seemed to be a viable and responsible option. In making this decision, we as a parish staff have researched current health guidance from both civil and Catholic authorities, and have consulted with other diocesan parishes that have incorporated some congregational singing in their worship.
If you are uncomfortable with singing at Mass, please know that the 11 am Mass in the gym as well as the Sunday evening Communion service will not feature additional singing.
